What?! As much as I don't even believe it myself, I bought another DSM. I have been looking at FDs since January, trying to find the right one. I saw some that I was interested in but they were in Cali, a little farther than I wanted to go. So for some reason I decide just to take a look through the DSM classifieds, just killing time really. Then I saw a car for sale that I felt I could not pass it up. What would possibly sway me from the FD to get yet another DSM? Here it is:
1999 GSX
48,xxx
6bolt
Slowboy Racing-3500 Heavy Duty Clutch
ACT lightweight 6 Bolt Flywheel
Short Shifter
550cc Injectors
Walbro 190 Fuel Pump
MHI Small 16g Turbo
SAFC II Fuel Controller
Apex-i Turbo timer
Slowboy Racing Stainless Steel Exhaust Manifold Cover
Full 3 Inch Apex-i N1 Exhaust (Cat-Back and 3" downpipe)
Eibach Pro Kit Lowering Springs 1" drop
OEM Carbon Fiber Hood

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t36/99redgst/100_0174.jpg

Some things will change immediately, SAFC will be removed. My Eprom should get to Steve today for socketing, wideband should arrive today.. Waiting on deciding what injectors I'll be running before ordering DSMlink, so the default will be correct, in case the battery dies and you don't have a laptop so you can limp it home. The L1R should arrive tomorrow. It may be a while before that is installed as I still need to get an external WG O2 setup. Other mods that will follow, meth injection, FMIC, there are a few others I am considering. Suspension will be addressed over next winter. Original plan was to pick it up this weekend, but it looks like it will be next weekend instead.

As long as the car is running solid I don't see why I wouldn't come. I'll probably wait on putting the L1R on til after this event. Is there a date I have to be signed up by?

Stash

I'll get engine shots later, nothing special under the hood at the moment really. I paid 8500, which I think is a damn good deal, I probably would have paid 10k for it. I always said if I was ever going to buy another 2g it had to be a 99 with black leather. Then I found this with 48k on it, there was no way I was passing it up. The biggest negative about the car is it sat in a guys front yard for a year with a 7 bolt that had a spun bearing. There is some light surface rust on the underside and a bit in the engine bay, that will all be taken care of over winter. The rust wasn't a big enough deterent to keep me from buying it. I figured what are the odds of finding another 99 with a near mint interior and this low of miles.

Stash
04-08-2008, 10:00 AM
Here are some engine bay shots, you can see the rust. Engine bay will be repainted over winter(something HLM can do perhaps?), all brackets will be sand blasted and powdercoated. I might also relocated the fuse box to the glove compartment, since I still have a spare 2g fuse box and the harness halfway made.

Todays progress:
SAFC II wiring removed
Eprom is installed
Clutch cut wire soldered in
Half of the wideband is soldered in

I was unable to remove the rear O2 sensor, couldn't get enough leverage. I'll have to use my shop privliges and get it on a hoist where I can get some leverage.

Tomorrow I will install the 950s and finish the wideband wiring. Depending on weather I may go and remove the rear O2 sensor.

well, if the impact did not work then maybe... putting a car on the hoist is not as easy as driving it on. with our cars, they usually sit so low, then you have to jack up the car anyways to just get the hoist arms under the car.

spin a rod bearing?

Stash
05-07-2008, 01:24 PM
As much as I would love to tell a story about some catastrophic damage, I can't. First there was the pushing coolant issue, not really a big deal as it didn't even fill the overflow tank on a tank of gas. Secondly, I was having tuning issues, mostly regarding knock. Then I did a compression test, the results were:
Cyl 1- 150
Cyl 2- 125
Cyl 3- 120
Cyl 4- 120

Hooked up the boost leak test, could get it just over 10psi, all the air was coming out of the VC vent, plug that it would leak from the oil cap or dip stick.

So, I came up with the plan of dropping this engine in the 1g since it still runs fine, should be sufficient for daily driving. Take the 6 bolt out of the 1g that has 140-150 compression in all cylinders, cometic HG, ARPs, lightly worked head. Then I can also take the ACT2600 from it as well the super elusive taboo SS clutch fork.

On top of this I need to take care of the suspension stuff as well, that has snowballed on me as well. The current list of things coming:
JIC FLA-2s
RMDSM sway bars
Poly front control arm bushings
Camber kit
Poly motor mounts

While the engine is out I think I will try to take care of the surface rust in the bay, probably just rattle can the areas I repair. I plan on having the engine bay painted this winter anyway.

DontStopMe

You didn't do a compression test before you bought it? Or atleast ask the previous owner about doing one?

Stash
05-07-2008, 02:15 PM
Nope, even if you would have told me the compression numbers I still would have bought it. Its a stock 6 bolt w/70k, not a big loss. Its sucks I missed the Shawano event, thats the only thing that upset me over the situation.

05-07-2008, 02:18 PM
You should have used Andys compression tester, then you'd have 150 across the board, lol. Well its good your not to upset by it. I'm sure you'll have it up and moving again real soon.

I seriously doubt that your car has only 48k miles on it. With the rust under the hood like it is and now with this problem. You should really check into that. I think someone was playing with the odometer or there is a different one in it. Or they pulled the put a different one in there and then put the stock one back in.

Stash
05-07-2008, 10:32 PM
The 7 bolt spun a rod bearing and the car sat in a front yard for over a year. That was the cause of the rust. It was a used 6 bolt with about 70-80k on it. Carfax checked out before the car was purchased.

Dizmm
05-08-2008, 09:29 AM
as long as the carfax checked out, i guess thats all that matters right. I mean even if it does have 100k miles on it, who's to know and without proof, it really cant effect KBB value.

Just hurry up and get that thing back on the road. Lots of events coming up soon!!!

This weekend I plan on working on the engine bay, next weekend will be the swap on the 1g. Then I will work on putting the engine in the 2g through out the week. Also have to install the air oil cooler, get the coilovers set up, install swaybars, poly bushings, do an alignment and mount 2 tires and balance all 4. That should keep me occupied for a while.

Shawano was a little hard on the car. Here's the POS O2 housing that was on at the event. I got it with the WG for really cheap, the quality looked shitty but I had no idead how shitty it was. The tubing that was used was very thin. Heres the result:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t36/99redgst/DSM038.jpg
Here you will see me pointing to the cracked off piece:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t36/99redgst/DSM039.jpg
It did make it home before completely breaking though. So I was in need of an O2 housing by this weekend. Since I know of no one who stocks an O2 housing flanged for a HKS I needed to take care of things myself.

So I grabbed a 2g O2 housing that I had sitting around, some spare tubing and the WG flange I cut off of the old O2. With a saws-all, grinder and welder I was able to make my own. Probably won't be permanent but at least I'll make it to the autox this weekend.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t36/99redgst/DSM042.jpg

Its just tacked together, I'll take it to work tonight to finish it up since my welder is a bit weak for this job and why not get payed to work on your own stuff? There will be a steel plate welded over where the WG passage merged with the rest of the exhaust.

Dizmm

How about a I trade you back a stock 2g housing for it, since thats how you acquired it anyway? I'm certainly not going to pay you money for a part I hooked you up with a great deal on. Do you want to sell me stuff that I gave you for free as well?

If you want i can CNC one or two up for you. I know coty is on here if any of you have seen the SS greddy type R flange I made for him.

Apparently the setup works decently.

Although Dizmm did run a faster time than me(I nearly tied that time in the fun runs after the event but I'm guessing he improved his time as well), but he also got more dry runs in than I did. I'm looking forward to the next event, it should be a good shootout(assuming we are both on street tires).

My very first run was dry (mostly) as it just started to rain, so i pushed my first run as i thought it would be my only dry run, the end result of going to fast was fun, but did not score a good time.

I got a total of 5 dry runs and 3 wet.

durring a fun run i scored a 53.3something.

This auto-x kinda sucked as some got more/less dry/wet runs. Very sucky if you are a competative driver.

Finally going to replace the homemade housing. Its held up well but it was not something I wanted on the car permanently. I went with a Straight Line Specialties o2 housing, and am very glad I did. The quality is excellent, really couldn't be better. I choose the Tial 44 w/ a 1.4 bar spring. I figured if I ever upgrade turbos it will probably be a FP that utilizes the 44.

Also have a Quaife front diff coming, I will be sending in the center diff to get converted to 4 spider.

I think diffs and the evo III 1st, 3rd and 4th and you would have never gotten rid of v2. Since the one thing about the evo you talked about was the tall first gear, the III gear is slightly taller than the VIII.

you are probably right, however, i sill would be missing the 4 door and A/C.

Test fit went better than I could have expected. Perfect fit, I can now fit my slim fans back in. I should have done this a long time ago. There was one negative to the dump tube though. Whoever welded it must have went all the way around in one continues bead or didn't allow enough cooling time and the flange warped. We'll see how that is handled today.
