Names jacob, i'm 16 in highschool (sun prairie HS) After lots of work and saving up (along with flipping prices on 3 other cars) I managed to buy my first turbo dsm.
A 1996 Talon Tsi. Fwd:( 177xxx miles, evo 3 16g turbo, hks ssq bov, fmic, just some simple stuff. Picked it up from some small town about hour and a half away from madison. Leaks oil which im fixing this weekend, and has some sort of fuel cut? or something around 4500rpms (2nd gear) at 10psi boost. Car just seems to either get fuel cut and/or do some sort of backfire 2 step thing while doing that. If anyone knows what this is thatd be great. Figured upgrading to a walbro 190 would solve the problem?
Just ordered a mbc, turbo timer, and some other small goodies. The build wont be the fastest due to being in highschool, but i assure you all it will be done right.
So, heres the pics you've all been waiting for.:D

Do a boost leak test and then tell us if it still sputters

Should probably put a timing belt cover on that thing before something bad happens lol. Other than that do a proper boost leak test. Ohh yea Welcome to the site, Have fun with the car.

Whats a cougar with an svt swap? Engine and trans from a svt focus or something?
Also wondering if you had something to tune with? (ECMlink, SAFC etc.?)
TSi-Rehab
01-13-2012, 11:47 AM
SVT contour swapped inside of the cougar. Same trans, was all motor almost fully built. Have pics of it I can post later today if ya wanna see.
As far as a tune, no. Not experienced with ecmlink and gunna do a tune after I get it running right .

I think a tune will help it run right to be honest.....
Sure post up some pics....my buddy had a svt focus and that thing was geared nice....pretty quick car for a n/a

Do I see pcv pipe being used as intercooler piping? uhhh...
oh yeah, Welcome!!

So is ecmlink or whatever a tune that people do at home?
And yeah those SVT focuses arnt half bad. The cougar was decently quick for a na too.
For the third time, pvc is getting fixed this weekend:)

Welcome,
I also suggest doing some research and finding out if the recalls have been done on the car. The lower control arm ball joint failure is not something you want to have to deal with, especially at highway speeds. Maintenance first, modifications next.
Besides that, enjoy your DSM.

You can tune ecmlink yourself halfway decently, they have videos on their site on how to set up settings and do a pretty decent self tune. Check your spark as well, I had a similar sounding issue when it would cut out while in boost and it turned out to be my spark plug wires.

Sounds more like a fuel dump if its backfiring. I would check anything fuel related.. injecters, fuel pump, or fuel pressure regulator

This happened to me, there was no steering wheel shaking or anything. I was going 60 down a county road and all the sudden my lower ball joint went out.

because it was toast. from what I remember he had to replace the whole lower arm?

prolly cuz the nutt stripped the head off the balljoint but it didnt break and go out like a normal joint would

Deep pockets?, nope. Hopefully getting 4 new tires tonight and if everything goes right il get them on tomorrow. With my luck, i probably destroyed the rim.

I'm basically becoming forced to sell it. I have a new tire going on today.

Well, being 16 you can only imagine how much of dicks parents can be. Apparently the bottom was "too rusty and about to fall"(coming from the shop who towed it home). So i contacted the guy i bought it from, and he happened to have pictures of when he had it on the lift. turns out the bottom is no where near about to fall at all.. Kinda confused, but oh well. so i might scrap some change up and try to fix it back together and beat it until its dead. I guess the only thing i could accept right now is trades.

My favorite line from my dad when I'm out in the garage working on my cars is, "Now what are you fixing." Became a frequent thing, but its the only thing that has taught me anything about cars and I don't mind working on my own vehicles. Hopefully my third dsm will be attainable soon.

most shops will try and find shit wrong with your car so they can make money. 99% likely your car is completly fine and would handle salty wisconsin roads for another decade. so sick of people trying to scam others into making money.

where are you from? all i can say if you decide to do your own work is,dont over think your vehicle.if you can take it apart you can damn sure get it back together if you pay attention to how you took it apart.if you dont OVER think your problem, you can solve it....im highly doubting your car was about to fall apart,my na was a rust bomb and got the shit kicked out of it on a daily basis and i was never worried about it falling apart on me cuz i built it and payed attention when i did.....if it was closer to spring i would trade you my tsi awd for your gst in a heart beat.black 2g turbo 5 speed is pretty close to whati want for autox next year
TSi-Rehab
01-19-2012, 07:01 AM
Going to go get it back today, and yeah i wouldn't be surprised if the shop was just trying to make money. They charged $166 towing fee, $120 something for a tire, and like 50 bucks for them to "fix the rim" and put everything back on.
And to be honest, this "black" 2g turbo 5speed is basically all paint fade.

Shock towers have no rust, i need to get this gone fast, my family hates it, and i constantly get bitched at for it.
Lights look extremely yellow in one of the pictures but thats just because its glaring really bad. It's all wired for subs and everything, has boost gauge, air/fuel, pyrometer, and i have a boost controller and apexi turbo timer for it with a harness.

If the neon isn't a SRT-4 turbo i'l have to say no.
My sister has a NA neon and the car has more problems than this country.
If you meant srt, then yeah i'm interested but otherwise il have to say no unless you have a different trade and/or cash.
My neon has no issues what so ever it always starts for me and I wouldn't be afraid to drive it cross country

black rt w/ silver stripes? mopar ecu and forged internals? if thats the neon im thinking it is then that would be a trade thats actually worth it. I remember racing that car in point on HH with my old red awd 1g and he beat me 1 outta 2. its a fast car. if its not the one im thinking either way R/T neons are nice.

murdered out 2nd gen neon rt from wausau, cammed out,xtd stage 1 pt cruiser clutch.lowered on 1g neon springs(not cut)after market tails and head lights nice car fairly low miles, religious oil changes.he just redid all the fornt end bushings in august i think?the trans has been split and bullet proofed...2001 rt vs gst? gst is not much faster if at all, worse gas mileage, higher miles and prolly beat on more then a neon...deffenitly more reliable...depends on what i was lookin for? both cars looks sick as hell, both fast, but the neon is a more relyable car,id prolly rather have the neon considering that and the resale value
i was told the car was traded off today
