Hey guys I need some help. I got a car from a guy that had an engine fire. It's a 92 eagle talon tsi awd. I went to the junk yard and got 2 milk crates of parts that I needed (everything on the firewall, hoses, wire harness, intake manifold). I'm having problems with a few things, so if I could get someone more knowledgeable to help me I would appreciate it. First problem shift cables, I believe I got them from a 90 or 91 fwd. I put the shift cables on and I only shift second and 4th. I adjusted the cables as far out as I could, paired them up to the old ones (they were the same length), made sure the cables wernt froze, made sure all gears shifted on tranny. I'm stumped, its like the cable isn't reaching far enough. As far as I researched they should work. Problem 2 there is a chunk of wires that come out on the passenger side, its by the strut coming out of the fender. There is about 9 wires and I know I don't have the right wire harness for the car that's why I ask. Problem 3 (more of a question) there is a tiny gold box under the cd player, not the ecu but right by it. If someone knows an answer please help, thanks

My guess on the "chunk of wires" is their probably for the abs plugs. The "gold box" is the MPI relay. As for the cables do they have adjusments on both?(inside the car).

Yes they do, I already adjusted them as far out as I could. What's the mpi relay for

90 cables/mounting brackets are different than 91-94's.

It would be more helpful for us if you could get some pics of what you have going on here. Mainly for the wiring. As for the shifter cables, you checked them out and they are good, they have been adjusted, and you're still only getting second on fourth. I have a friend that had a 97 GS-T with a similar issue, it turned out being the clutch, it needed to be adjusted and eventually replaced. If you could describe the way it shifts or feels when trying to shift that may give more insight on the issue. Your MPI relay controls some part of the fuel pump if I remember correctly. As long as the car runs it should be alright.

there's the link I took a few pics. As u can see with the shift cables the cable doesn't reach, the cable is pulled all the way out so that's how short I am. The picture of the 4 plugs, I know one or 2 are for the stereo but what are the others for.. I believe everything is plugged in. All 4 of them connectors come outta the same harness (the one going across the support frame under the dash. Then I have a picture of one connector that is connected to the ecu wire harness I have no clue where it goes. I have 3 connectors that are for the ecu, one connector that goes to the mpi relay box and that one in the pic that doesn't connect anywhere that I've seen. Another wiring issue is that the top of my tranny has a red and black wire coming out of the sensor. The car I pulled the harness had quite a few wires to that plug (have pics on Photobucket).

That connector on top of the tranny is the wheel speed sensor for your speedometer I believe, not exactly sure. You said the cable won't reach? Did it ever? The description you gave at first leads me to believe you had one on there and it reached and now it doesn't? The shifter linkage needs to be on there for it to shift correctly, although I'm sure you know that. Another thing too look into, make sure where that one shifter linkage connects that its tight on there, as well as the two on the inside by the shifter. If those are even a little bit loose they may make the shifting stiff/ not shift at all, I had a different friend with a GS-T have shifting issues and it turned out to be a loose shifter linkage on the transmission.

There are 2 cables, the old one and a new one the old one is burnt and froze tight. The new one I got from a junk yard made sure everything was tight like u said and it won't shift into anything but 2nd and 4th. I took them out and compared the 2 side by side and seem to be the same length.. I have a 91 fwd 93 motor with a 7 bolt tranny I was wondering if those would work. And as far as what you think is the wheel speed sensor how do I connect 2 wires to the clip that has like 7 and what are those for?

*update* - I went to the junk yard to get the shift cable bracket off the tranny so now it works properly and shifts all gears fine. I also found out my wiring by the cd player. 2 of the 4 clips are for my radio

The top right and the bottom right go to the radio and I found out that the bottom left clip goes to a little grey box right next to the mpi relay. As far as the top left clip, I need to splice the wires to this clip from my understanding...

I will be finishing up tomorrow and will keep everyone updated with any other snags I have

That big one on the left if I'm understanding where your at plugs into the main engine harness and I believe it runs most of your gauges if irc.

Ok here's the update... Sorry it took a while to reply but I've been dealing with several problems. I got the wire harness in correctly and got the car started, which at that point the engine was shaking and running like poo along with a case of idle surge. I went thru checking for boost leaks (none as far as I seen) and checked each connection plug. When I unpluged the maf sensor the car ran fine so I switched out maf sensors and still had the same problem. I read that if unplugging the maf sensor "fixes the problem" that its not the maf, its something else that's causing the problem. I switched out ecu's and that solved my idle surge problem.. I took it down the road and realised 2nd gear grinds really bad I can't get it to shift into 2nd at all. I know its a stock car but it doesn't seem to have much power, kinda doggy and picks up a little slower then I think it should. When the car idles the boost gauge sits at -5 when I step on it the boost it goes up to positive 7 to 10 and when I let off the gas it bottoms out at -7 and goes back up to -5. I have an aftrrmarket boost gauge I'm going to hook up and test to see if its not just the gauge but I think that the aftermarket one will read the same. It just doesn't seem like its not running great. I forgot to mention I have a hole in my flex pipe which I'm gonna try as well. I'll post a pic on how I have my hoses ran.

take a vacum line off of the intake or intercooler pipes blow compressed air into it....and fix any leaks...... do not go by factory boost guage its not accurate

I did that.. there isn't any leaks. I also hooked up an aftermarket boost gauge. At idle it reads -16 and if I step on it the needle goes up normally to positive 10 (doesnt spike going up) and when I let off the gas it drops to -18 to -20 within a blink of an eye then it goes back to where it started at (-16). I switched out the waste gate which didn't do anything. Here's a kicker, when I unplug the maf it sits at -12 to -14. With it plugged in it reads -16

I believe normal idle for DSM is around 19

I talked to beyond redline yesterday and that's what they told me as well.. I'm still tryin to burn the old or bad gas out of it also. Other then that my only problem is my second gear and reverse grind. I got a new clutch slave cylinder that I'm going to install to see if that solves the problem along with some gear lube. I know my synchros are still good in all gears
