View Full Version : Fu@king oil leak! Where are you???
Ok, I have been trying to find this damn thing for 2+ weeks now. I cant stand this crap.
car is a 1998 GSX 6 bolt block, 7 bolt head. So i have a pretty good size leak somewhere around the timing belt. I cant tell where it is because the timing belt is whipping the oil all over my engine bay! HELP! So i have replaced the...
oil pan gasket,
oil pump assembly gasket,
head gasket,
crankshaft seal,
oil filter bracket gasket.
The cam seals are newer, so i dont thing that could be it, and the valve cover gasket looks good, no cracks or anything... (bought a new one, will replace it today) where the hell is this leak coming from??? is there any seals/gaskets im missing??? all gasket have been replaced using Felpro gaskets with a high temp RTV on both sides. (RTV was applied fairly lightly but enough to cover the entire gasket surface) any oil ports in the head/block that could be unplugged or something? What is going on???
The engine is 9.0/1 compression if that makes a difference. I really need to find this leak quick and repair it! The car is ready for dynotuning but i cant have oil leaking all over the table,(any im sure its not good to have oil on the timing belt) and i go back to college on the 4th (2 weeks) and i need my car tuned! ahhh!!! any thoughts??
Thanks you so much!

Can you degrease all of it and let it idle and watch? Oil pump/gasket good and tight?
yepp, everythings tight, all gaskets are new. Im de-greasing now, and ill watch it idle, but it might not be a large enough leak to find at idle. I cruised about 20 miles, or 30 min and it was pretty apparent that there was a leak, but ill give the idle test a shot!

Let it idle for a while or only take it around the block to warm it up.
Tried that, it seems as though oil comes from everywhere all at once.. haha I have determined that its not coming from the head, somewhere from the block... Im going to try RTV'ing all the bolts on the front case, and redo the oil pan gasket... again...

Oil filter housing?
I just replaced that gasket, so i wouldnt think so... I think its coming from the bolts holding the front case in.. or the auto tensioner bolt holes... so ill seal those up today

Buy some rtv ultra grey lol
does that replace paper gaskets? I have heard some people dont even bother with paper anymore.. I pulled the auto tensioner to find the bolts covered in oil. RTV'ed them up and guess what! IT STILL LEAKS. fml. so there still oil all over the block and oil pan, but theres very little on the head, and a ton on the hood... where else could this be leaking from the block???

It can. Shits just badass. It's the stuff they use from factory on oil pans and stuff. Never had a leak again after that stuff.
looks like ill be buyin some of that shit soon! any idea if the oil pump seal could go out after only 3000 miles? its either that or the cam seals

Was it fel pro or ebay? Guess you don't have much to lose.
All felpro, I dont do ebay shit. Im going to try pulling the timing belt of and running the oil pump with a drill. sound like a good idea?

Definitely, just wear safety glasses. Degrease it and go to town you'll find it.

I know you don't wana hear this but you ever think you might have a hairline crack in your block some where on your block for over tightening a bolt or something it happened to my friend when he built his honda motor
I would kill myself if i had a hairline crack... lol after $5400 of machine work and parts, I wont let this block go haha but..
SOLVED!!! I tried the oil pump with drill thing on a cold engine, and it didnt work... decided to pull the pump apart anyway to find a small split in the outer seal! YAY! lol 15 min later, i was back in business ready for dynotuning! Thanks guys, and thanks especially to frankinstien406! You had faith in me! :D haha
oh, the Block is... (in case you were curious)
6 bolt block, Manley forged crank, eagle h beams, Aries 9.0/1 pistons 20 over, ACL tri metal race bearings, BS Elim, everything is balanced and micro polished, decked PERFECTLY TRUE to the ARP L19 studs, bored, rings fully gaped (top ring to .019, second ring is .024) PERFECT BLOCK, NO CRACKS!!! lol my machinist said it will take 850whp all day long! (not sure if the rods will hold, but yea!) thanks again!

Figured it was something stupid lol. Good to hear. Post dyno results lol
Well, lets start the trouble shooting again... Drove her to work today to find, yep you guessed it, more oil on the hood... cam seals are the only thing i havnt done... sound like a possibility? i find it strange that theres no oil on the head below the cams...
WAIT, I may have it! so the head is dry, but i took a look behind the cam gears, and its really hard to see, but they looked a little wet. I dried them off, idled the car for 2 min, and took a really close look, to find the intake gear to be wet! ha! replacing cam seals now!
It was the cam seals that finished off the leak issue! Thanks again for all the help!
