Just got a question about this. putting in a motor into my girls 97 gs eclipse and i got a motor off of a member on here but i'm going to go ahead and change the timing belt while the motor is out. I've found that some places online sell a mechanical tensioner and i'm wondering what if any advantage is there to getting a mechanical one. such as this... http://www.store.partsdinosaur.com/product1310.html

^ hmm so how halfassed do you think it'd be to change the belt and waterpump but leave the idler and tensioner it currently has?

i wouldnt bother with the idler and tentioner, the bearings sound good and the tentioner worked fine so i would save the money on those 2 and change the rest.the mechanical tentioner will give better timing from a performance stand poitn where as the hydrolic tentioner flops around a little bit and chnages the timing

and yes the mechanical is a little more reliable but i have yet to see the 420a hydrolic one go out

You might end up paying for it later.

yeah i pretty much decided that i'm gonna just go ahead and get a tensioner. just wanted to get this thing back together sooner. But i'd rather not cut corners especially since it's the womans car and i'd rather it be as reliable as possible. Now i'm just deciding if i want t get fisted and pay the like 80-100 for just the tensioner and like 70 for the belt from the parts store or if i should just order the one i linked to above with the mechanical tensioner...

personally I would never use a tensior that is that style in the link. That is what a 2.4 stratus comes with and they seem to fail alot more than the hydraulic ones do plus. Personally I would do what north said see how much play is in the idler pulley. Replace it if you want but I would leave the hydraulic tensioner. Just my 2 cents.

Ended up just getting everything from rockauto.com. i noticed it charged me tax, then i noticed they had a 608 area code.... is this actually a storefront somewhere around the janesville/madison area? or just based there?
Hopefully i get everything by sunday and get that motor in, and hopefully i have a clutch left on the talon once the womans done driving it...

hopfully you got it cheap enough to justify the peace of mind.its hard to gauge those kinds of things,is the price worth the peace of mind? since its your old ladys car it was prolly worth it

eh it was about 180 with shipping. still way cheaper than the part stores. And since it's her car i wanted the peace of mind. And i don't like her driving my cars either haa

I think that might be the place the Parts Place gets stuff from in Rockford.

Ok well after driving the car for like 30 minutes it sounds like this motor starts to knock........ it's quiet when it's cold but once it's been driven for about 30 minutes it sounds like the damn thing starts knocking/ticking........
