View Full Version : Oil in my coolant.

I have been noticing a little bit of oil in my coolant lately. When I take off my radiator cap there is some oil on the seal and in the outlet pipe the cap comes off of. After doing some research I have narrowed it down to the oil cooler and the turbo. The reason I don't suspect the head gasket is because the car doesn't over heat at all under any conditions. The oil cooler SOMETIMES I will notice, has a drop of green coolant on the bottom of it but not heavy enough to fall, just hanging there. The turbo is a 14b with some decent shaft play and it smokes a little bit under boost. I found out it smoked a little after I had my buddy drive the car down the street and I saw the smoke. I read up that the shaft seals on the turbo could be going bad, causing the smoking/oil getting in the coolant. I didn't notice any coolant in my oil when I changed it the other day. Any input would be great!

Usually it goes the other way around. Oil in your coolant isn't going to f up anything like coolant in your oil will.

It looked whiteish but it was during day time and it was a ways down the street so I will have somebody drive away from me again so I can get a better look at it.

I really hope that it's my oil cooler that is bad. Hell, even my turbo being shot wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
6 bolt or 7 bolt if 6.... what oil cooler do you have? if its the liquid cooler, not air, its very common for the coolant fins to break for over tightening the cooler in place. replace the oil filter bracket with the older g1 that has the air cooler and run air cooling.
if its a 7 bolt, Head gasket. i had a gs that was mixing oil into the coolant, and it wasnt overheating at all... head gaskets are easy enough to do.. just slap in a $40 gasket from oriley with some ARP headstuds, and your good to go!(also, crank you boost! i have seen maultipl organic gaskets hold 35 psi of boost with ARP's!)
im not thinking its the turbo... you would have to serously crack the center housing or something along those lines to start mixing there... i suspect your turbo would sieze or blow befure you started notacing oil in the coolant.., but i could be wrong?
