90 and some 91s had 22 splines while 91+ had 23 splines. I am pretty sure that is all that matters. If you have a/t you need an a/t t-case and vice versa. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

It also depends on the year of the car. If you have a 95-96 trans you need a 95-96 t-case. 97-99 trans needs a 97-99 t-case. Otherwise the gear ratios won't match. Also what Anthony said is correct for 1g DSM's.
