Don't really need to tip it but I'm not going to stop you. They have quite a bit of room if you pull that plate off by the control arm. And neutral or in gear doesn't matter. Its not going to affect how it goes together. Take your clutch back off and make sure it slides onto the input shaft if you didn't already. Also make sure your pilot bearing didn't fall off.
yup i hate this car some how my jack sliped out and the tranny fell on my leg if that wasnt enough for the car to take out on me the tranny still wouldnt go in grrr i have some people that are going to help me tmro if it doesnt rain all day ahhhhh i hate dsms! just kidding but im disliking mine today!

It is a bitch to line up trannies, just keep at it and make sure things are perfectly straight. Often it takes lining up both the tranny and the engine using jacks. Personally I've done enough that I've given up completely on doing this with only a hydraulic jack (though it does work it just sucks). Consider heading down to Harbor Freight and picking up a tranny jack for around $60. It straps right to the transmission, rolls, and tilts so that it can't fall on your and it is easily manipulated.

I just pick it up and put it in. You have a non turbo right? Those things are so light. Playing around and trying to balance on jacks is a waste of time. Try doing an awd trans. Those things are heavy when they're over your head.
lol i have picked it up tons of times already i just cant line it up its not a heavy trans i know that my firebird one was a bitch to lift on my own though

Try lifting an auto awd trans once.

I used the jack method. When the tranny was close to the engine I had a special rod that was long and got thinner towards the rounded tip. Put one or two of those rods in through the transmission bolt holes to the engines. It Helps align things and she slides in.
Kinda like the black tool on the left.

did u use a clutch alignment tool? im assuming you did. double check that there arent dowel pins that are trying to take up the same hole because one of the dowel pins could have stuck in the block from the old tranny and the new one has one there already...ive seen that happen too. I would just pick it up screw the jack unless its an auto awd tranny u dont need one leaving the car in nuetral does make it easier to get the splines on the clutch alined if you rotate your engine a little on the timing belt side with a 1/2 socket wrench.

Fuck that. I've done it with another person and my back hated me for a week.
