Hey guys woundering if you could help me out? Have a 98 gst just upgraded the turbo to a evo III ( told a good one to get ) since install the knock sensor has gone bad and the car runs rough. i want to get it tuned but not sure what i need or what is best. the shop close to me told me to go with a Apexi Neo another told me not to and use dsm link with a 95 eprom ecu. Im jsut not sure but want to make sure I do it right!

DSM Link and never look back.

agreed, but if your on a budget and have no intention of buying a 255 fuel pump and very large injectors dsmlink is overkill from a tuning standpoint. If were talking tuning and features.. like 2 step rev limiters, antilag, complete control over the ecu and so on.. well than thats another story.

There is no such thing as "overkill" in the DSM world anymore. With the tuning solution available these days at very limited cost (Jackal for 1gs H8 or evo ecus for 2gs) there is no reason that anyone with a brain would suggest any sort of AFC for these cars anymore. DSMlink by all accounts rocks but I've never used it and it is more expensive, in most cases it has the same features as the other tuning solutions but a much easier learning curve and much more support.

Aemeth, how is your car coming? I'm sorry I haven't really gotten back to you recently on your offer to meet up. I think I might have some time on Sunday if I don't have to drive to Wausau.

Car is on the road, needs to be tuned though. Still hitting nasty fuel cut and I was told not to vent my bov back into my intake with the dsmlink so everytime i shift the car wants to die. tomorrow im heading to wausau so adam (2fst-gst) can tune it. I was heading that way anyway to look at his old turbo set up so i figured kill 2 birds with stone since he has over 5 yrs experience with dsmlink.
We can still meet up anytime though and you can play with the dsmlink

Exactly, I've been running one in my car since last winter, before anyone was able to reflash the 98/99 DSM ecus. It still has a few advantages over the H8 ecus which make it worthwhile including integrated control outputs (ICS, and fuel pump) which can be programmed to activate whatever you'd like (nitrous, cyclone IM, double pumper fuel setup, etc) and electronic boost control which allows you to vary boost by gear and RPM. If I were building a car today I would have a hard decision between the H8 and evo ecus because of the boost control. The H8 ecus are a little bit easier to install (though I installed my evo ecu in 30 minutes), and they take less setup. They can also use a stock MAF whereas using an evo ecu I would recommend immediately moving to SD or an evo MAF because the evo8 ecu doesn't like the 2g MAF as well as we would like it to, not that a number of us didn't use that combo for quite a while fairly happily.

In short though there are a lot of low cost tuning options for DSMs which make using any sort of AFC pointless.

Im very intrested in doing this.

From YOUR experience how hard was changing everything over and setting up the ecu for the dsm.

Half an hour worth of laying upside down over the kick plate in an uncomfortable position with a flashlight and a tiny screwdriver. That is it for physical work the with evo8 ecu. I could easily do the swap now in about 10 minutes though and the guides available today are far better than they were when I started.

Getting the car running after that is easy. I would happily build and post a basic rom for anyone that asks just list your engine mods and I can send you something that will at least get the car to idle and drive around. Fuel and timing tuning are not things that I would be willing to do over email but there are tuners with significant experience that will for a price. The learning curve is a bit steep but with someone to walk you through it it wouldn't be terribly hard.
