The pictures on the 3rd page...

Are you trying to make a targa top or somthing?.. I didn't get it.

He wanted a big sunroof ;p

He is eliminating the sunroof that was on it.. The car that has the top chopped off is a parts car I think.

Jake
03-09-2008, 06:26 PM
It says at the start of the page, "converting the sunroof into a non-sunroof car".

I was just about to say, I'm doing a targa top on my talon too. But there was way too much cut out of that to make a targa. :)

Lookin good! Did the body twist at all when you cut it out seeing you dont have a cage?

BoostinPower
03-09-2008, 09:10 PM
It shouldnt have, since he only cut the section where the sunroof was.. The main support was still intact..

Jake

You'd be surprised on how much the roof holds together.

I wont cut the roof off of my car until I have it fully mounted on a steel bed so the chassis doesnt twist. When Dre did his targa, he noticed a major flex, especially when driving. Good way to tell is jack the car up directly under the door handle and see if the gap on the door changes.

Just a thought before you cut the roof off the good car.

Dizmm
03-09-2008, 11:35 PM
yeah, this car was up on a hoist, and when we cut the 2 front A-pillers, the entire body flexed a good half an inch to nearly an inch. I think these chassis are kinda week.

Jake
03-09-2008, 11:45 PM
I figured it did but I have yet to cut the roof of my car so I didnt know.

How are you planning on cutting the roof off the good car?

Dizmm

I figured it did but I have yet to cut the roof of my car so I didnt know.

How are you planning on cutting the roof off the good car?

To answer you honestly, I don’t know...

2 options,

Option 1: cutting at all the pillars very carefully. I'd have to remove the windshield, and the 2 rear side windows.

Option 2:just cut a template out of the sunroof hole on my car (the good car), then use that template to cut out the exact same shape on the "parts" roof. That way the metal will have the same curvature of the new roof. Weld it from underneath, maybe put a few braces in there so the new piece of metal wont flex too much. then fill in the small cracks with some mud, sand her all down and paint it.

Either route, I probably wont do this myself, I'd rather have it look good if not great rather than look like dump. I maybe could do it and it would look ok, but i have a friend that owns a body shop and does it for a living that will cut me a deal. I'll leave it to a pro!

Why are you getting rid of the sunroof? You should just leave it.

That was one thing I looked for in my new car was the sunroof.. Gotta enjoy just cruising with the sunroof open ;)

That shouldn't have been too hard. I think I have seen one GSX that didn't have a sunroof, fairly rare find. I have to wonder if it is really worth the time, effort and money. Is eliminating that wieght going to make a noticable difference? I could understand looking for a car without one, but seems like too much off a pain in the ass with the risk off it not turning out very good. I would just wait and see if someone comes through with one of those CF sunroof plugs. But of course, this is my opinion.

Dizmm
03-10-2008, 04:50 PM
Well, to start with, the sunroof was gone when i got the car. It was replaced with a piece of plexiglass. and it was cracked and looked like crap. A sunroof assembly weighs about 70lbs, and thats a lot of weight that is at the highest point in the car. By removing the sunroof, you will lower your center of gravity quite a bit. The top of my roof already needs to be repainted because of 4 wholes that Jtoby drilled into the roof. Not sure what Jtoby was thinking at the time, but thats one thing he did on this car that looked like crap.

There is large interest in a 2g CF sunroof plug. Ken Davis(Primedtsi) was the first on the list, which was today and there are already 7 others that want one as well. Seems like this company is capable of making it happen, looking at all the other products they make a simple plug should be a cake walk. But I guess you don't want to hold out too long as spring is approaching quickly?

this is like the 2nd time i have seen a list started. I even started one a while back on a carbon fiber parts thread on tuners. seems like they get a few people on the list and then its forgotten. I'll subscribe, and if they make it within a month or two, i will jsut throw a piece of plexiglass on the roof and use that for a little while. car wont be drivin in rain, or at least it doesn't have to be.

It just seems as though that would be so much easier. It would suck to go through all of the work welding in a new roof or section of roof, have it turn out OK, and then the plug becomes available right after.

If you buy one, I will definitely be interested in the "solid" top that you cut off the spare car. I need one for a "spare/changeable" piece for the targa.

Sounds good. I am going to PM the Vendor on DSMtuners that is offering CF parts and see if I can get a production date and price on the carbon fiber sunroof plug. I'll let ya know Jake.

how would the plug attach? would you need all the original mounting stuff for the sunroof etc?... in order to attach the plug? or is it going to need to be bolted or adhered on someway??? then what about it cracking? and don't tell me CF is oooo-sooo strong, i've used it before. in a flat piece, it's not strong. no stronger than sheetmetal. and will be prone to cracking. metal doesn't crack. you can reinforce the sheetmetal by tacking thin metal strips across the top. you cant reinforce a flat piece of CF.

personally, i think the piece of metal welded on and smoothed would be the way to go. not to mention, dizmm still has 4 holes in the roof from the previous owner that need to be filled in yet.

I'd rather do a CF sunroof. Easier, cooler to say i have a CF roof(ish). It would most likely bolt up like the stock sunroof assembly. Or at least I am guessing. We'll see

Devlish
03-11-2008, 11:23 AM
so then the only weight you'd be removing is the glass. which is heavy, yes... but probably not as heavy as the motor and arms, etc. then you still got 4 holes up there.

i agree, CF would be neater tho.

I believe they would get rid of the complete assembly for the sunroof, (or at least I would hope) and it would just bolt right up to where the stock sunroof assembly would go. The glass is about 70% of the weight in the sunroof assembly.

Damn those look nice! I'm guessing for the fronts only or was that price for all 4 corners?

I havent decided yet, I'm between these and Brakeman's. These definitely have more meat to them, thats for sure!

MMMMMM, unsprung weight drastically reduced.

i dunno, i am going to weigh the difference of the stock brake setup vs this setup. The rotors are pritty heavy being 13in x 1.25in. The calipers are much lighter however which is a plus.

I should have them on this next week and I'll post up some results.

Dizmm
03-26-2008, 02:32 PM
Well, i installed the big brakes in Dizmm Version 2.0, and holy balls. They will lockup my street tires no problem, but with some thresh-hold braking I can overcome that. I installed the race brake pads as RA is only a few weeks away. Well, I really cant even drive on the street with them without making dogs bark within a 1 mile radius. The screech and squeal so loud its not even funny. I will have to throw the street pads back on until i get to Road America.

If you're feelin frisky, cut your bumper in half to allow more flow to the intercooler as well as the important radiator so many people forget about:

Well, at about 4am this morning the new engine was in the car and running. few small things to do yet before its fully trackable.

Quick version:
6 bolt swap using 2g pistons on 1g rods, and the 2g head. All new ACL Race bearings, all new ARP main & Head bolts, new OEM rings. Basically a full fresh motor.

Had really no issues other than a small lip at the top of the cylinder wall, which thanks to the help of a local performance shop bringing over his rim-reamer thingy, the lip was gone.
